Malta is an island country in the middle Mediterranean Sea. The archipelago, a small but strategically important group of islands, has played an important role in the struggles of a succession of powers for dominance of the Mediterranean. The principal physical feature of Malta is a well-defined escarpment that bisects the island along the Victoria Lines Fault, which runs from Point ir-Raeb near Fomm ir-Ri Bay to the coast northeast of Gargur at Madliena Fort.

The highest sections are coralline limestone uplands that form a triangle plateau; the highest point is Ta' uta, which rises to 830 feet (253 metres) in the southwest. Blue clay slopes separate the uplands from the surrounding areas, while an undercliff area exists where the coralline plateau has dropped and provides a subordinate surface between the sea and the original beach. Malta has a total coastline of around 136 kilometres (219 km).
